Skinned Knees

Tears streamed down the dirt streaked face of a skinny little girl in blue as a gaggle of other children laughed at her. The big, bully looking boy that had pushed her pointed and laughed as blood trickled down the girl's knee.

"Go home Dai-loonie. Play with your imaginary friends," he sneered. The other children laughed.

The girl's crying intensified as she struggled to stand, tripping over her skirts and ending up back in the dirt, causing the cruel children to laugh all the more at her misfortune.

Suddenly a young boy with a shock of dark brown hair and fierce brown eyes came out of no where and punched the boy in the mouth. "You leave her alone. She hasn't done anything to you," he said fiercely, readying another punch.

The other boy's eyes opened wide with fear, "You're both crazy!" he cried before taking off, the other children not far behind.

Turning back around to the girl in blue, the dark-haired boy held out his hand, "Are you alright?" he asked kindly. Taking note of the blood on her knees and the tears in her dress, the boy helped the girl up off the ground and set to brushing her off. He was a few years older than her, and quite a bit taller. "My name is Kale. What's yours?" he asked, trying to distract her from her tears of childhood anguish.

"Dai…Dailana." she murmured through the sniffles. She wiped the back of her hands across her face, stopping her tears and smearing the dirt in muddy streaks.

"Don't worry Dai. I'll protect you," he said with a roguish smile.

"Promise?" she whispered.

"Promise," he said, sincerity in his eyes. "Come on. Let's go get you cleaned up."

From that moment on Dailana and Kale were inseperable. The two played together any chance they got. Their favorite playground was the ruins of the Jedi enclave near Dailana's family farm. There, the two children dreamed of being great heroes like the Jedi Knights. Sticks served as makeshift light sabers as they battled Sith Lords, droids, bounty hunters, and a thousand other villains from the seediest walks of life the Galaxy could offer.

When they collapsed from exhaustion and laid on the ground, looking up at the crumbling, vine covered ceilings, Kale would brag, "One day, I really am going to be a Jedi."

Laying on her side, her eyes never leaving his face, Dailana would ask, "But what about me?"

"You'll come with me! We'll see the Galaxy together!" Kale would assure her.

"Yeah, but what if they won't have me?" Dai would ask fearfully.

"Doesn't matter," Kale would say, "I'll make them take you with me. I'll never leave you."

"Never ever?" Dai would say, sitting up quickly. Her blue eyes staring into his deep brown ones.

"Never ever." he'd smile, "You're my best friend. We'll always be together."

Waking with a start a much older Dailana let a few tears slide down her face before wiping them away quickly. These dreams were always the hardest. Terror, fear, sadness, that she could handle…but memories of happiness? That's what really tortured her at night.

A steady beeping had begun in the front of her ship, coming from the cockpit. Looking at the display beside her bed she groaned, it was still very early in the morning. Throwing on clothes she trudged to the front and sat in her chair with a yawn. Methodically she pressed buttons and turned knobs, waking the ship up. The beeping continued and she groaned, cursing under her breath before pressing the offending button.

"What do you want?" she grumbled, rubbing sleep from her eyes. "I'm up alright?"

"You're late," said a gruff voice, "You were supposed to call me an hour ago. Get your ass in gear and get me my shipment!"

"Alright! Alright!" she groaned, rolling her eyes. "I'm on my way."
